Unqualified Gamers: Jon and Cody

Welcome to Game/Life Balance U.S., the American edition of the Game/Life Balance podcast. We’re a lifestyle podcast hosted by Cody Gough and Jonathan Martin, frienemies since childhood and growing gamers who are trying to juggle their gaming hobbies with the increasing demands of the “real world.”

We release episodes bi-weekly and  talk about how games – and we as gamers – have changed over the years, with a focus on how we manage our time so we can actually enjoy our hobbies. We’re increasingly turning our attention towards retro gaming and trying to understand their advantages and disadvantages when compared with the latest and greatest that video games have to offer.

You can listen and subscribe on YouTube, iTunes, Stitcher, and more, and if you like what you hear, then please leave us a review!

Cody Gough

Cody is a veteran radio host and podcaster, currently working as host and executive producer of the Curiosity Podcast and as a part-time producer at Chicago’s 720 WGN Radio for the last decade. Cody is the kind of guy who knows a little bit about a lot of things, bouncing between fandoms with reckless abandon. But video games have always been his true love. He is a retired competitive Smash Brothers: Melee player, knows the names of all original 150 Pokemon by heart (in rap form), and has a VHS tape of him beating Castlevania: Symphony of the Night… which he has actually watched with friends. At parties.

When he’s not gaming, Cody dabbles in cosplay, most memorably Booker DeWitt (Bioshock Infinite) and Dr. Horrible (both the white and red lab coat versions). As an occasional actor in Chicago, he also takes on nerdy projects at every opportunity, most notably his lead role in the no-budget YouTube feature film “Dance Dance Revolution: The Warrior’s Path,” the Troll 2 of video game movies.

Jonathan Martin

If Cody is a jack-of-all trades, then Jonathan is a jack of few. He’s been gaming since he was 5 years old, starting on the original NES, and fell in love with the medium upon the discovery of the JRPG. Jon grew up on Nintendo systems but branched out when all the best RPGs appeared on the Playstation, and notably delved into the domain of massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs) when he got hooked on World of Warcraft in college.

Jonathan is a jack of few trades because he’s basically good at playing video games and being a pharmacist. With his true love being board games of epic scope (Twilight Imperium, Through the Ages, etc.), Jonathan turns to video games because it’s hard to get a group together for those board games. An avid bowler as well, he basically did all the most unpopular things in school. If Cody is the brains and the producer of the podcast, then Jonathan is the… well, actually, we’re not really sure why he’s here.

Rob and AC of Game/Life Balance Australia

Rob and AC are the original owners of the Game/Life Balance brand name and the original Game/Life Balance podcast, and graciously allowed Cody and Jon to use the name Game/Life Balance U.S. after much begging, pleading, and threats of bribery. They are hilarious and highly appreciated by Cody and Jon, who could not agree on literally any other name besides Game/Life Balance. Rob and AC host Game/Life Balance Australia, which is objectively hilarious and which you should definitely subscribe to.

Gonna Geek Network

We post a lot of interesting and entertaining video game stuff there, but don’t forget that we’re part of the Gonna Geek Podcast Network, where you can find plenty of other shows to satisfy your geeky appetite. Thanks for listening!

  1. Hi Guys

I have to say I appreciate the name and philosophy of Game/Life Balance. It sounds like you are at the stage in life where “adulting” is cutting into your valuable gaming time. As a middle aged Mom who just got into gaming last year, I am trying to find the balance between work, kids, YouTube channel and leveling up my power armor.

Keep up the good work and I will continue to follow you.

Have a Great Day! – Mom
